Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

ABCs of Summer: C

{photo 1 source, photo 2 source, photo 3 source, photo 4 source, photo 5 source, photo 6 source}

1. Campfire – Even if you aren’t going camping, enjoy a campfire in your backyard or at the beach.

2. Concerts – SLO County boasts scads of free concerts this summer. Here’s a list

3. Compare and contrast – Watch a movie version of a book your family has read, then discuss the differences and similarities. (Perhaps Tom Sawyer, Little Women, or Sherlock Holmes…?)

4. Climb a tree

5. Creek – Play in the creek in downtown SLO.

6. Cooking – Take the night off from making dinner and let the kids do the cooking! Here are 9 Recipes Kids Can Make from Real Simple.

Oh and one more “C” event this summer:

Central Coast Shakespeare Festival – Watch Shakespeare under the stars! Much Ado About Nothing is playing this summer – Here’s the calendar with links to purchase tickets.

Did you see this cool link on our Facebook page? It's about color, which starts with C!

Colors: Why Isn't the Sky Blue? – This podcast is about the way that colors work (which is how we ended our science cycle this past year). It starts with Newton and ends with an analysis of Homer's The Illiad & The Odyssey (part of our literature cycle next year!). Sounds like a fantastic SLOCA summer listen! Here's a link to the full 4-Part Podcast about Colors.

And finally, if we hear of any student performances happening this summer involving SLOCA kids, we will still post them here on Fridays. Here's one coming up:

Into the Woods, Jr. – Presented by San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre (previously SLO Little Theatre). SLOCA UMS student Sienna Ritter and SLOCA HS student Alyssa Mickey will be performing in this play, which runs July 21-Aug 6, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with Saturday and Sunday matinees. Tickets can be purchased here.
