Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Astronaut Scott Kelly is Coming to SLO!

SLOCA strives to achieve many goals. Some are in the classroom, and some are organization-wide. One of them is to be the best place to go to school. Another is to be the best place to work. A third is to be an active and relied upon organization here in SLO that is looked to as a community asset. We are working toward this third goal by drawing in speakers who can teach us. We are seeking to find individuals whom we can learn from.

Last year, SLOCA brought in renown storyteller Garrison Keillor to the Performing Arts Center, and so many of you were part of that sold-out crowd. This year, we are turning our focus to the sciences and to the sky by hosting the amazing American astronaut who has spent more consecutive days in space than any human who has ever lived – Captain Scott Kelly. Our school is bringing him to the Performing Arts Center in SLO on the evening of Tuesday, March 20th at 7:30 pm.

Would you consider marking your calendars and supporting our rapidly growing school, by coming out to hear from NASA Astronaut, Captain Scott Kelly? Along with four other space missions, Scott Kelly spent a year commanding the International Space Station. When he is here in SLO, he will tell you about his journey to the stars. You’ll also hear how, like many of you, he had an “idea,” and how he saw that idea through and he now gets to inspire the rest of us through his book, titled Endurance.

Here’s a greeting Captain Kelly recorded for us:

In addition to Captain Kelly’s visit to the PAC, we are also offering a few other related activities that we’d like you to know about:

  • Thursday March 8th, 6:00 pm at SLOCA (free and open to the public) – Movie screening of: A Year in Space. This film, adapted from TIME's original digital video series, takes viewers behind-the-scenes of astronaut Scott Kelly's 12-month stay on the International Space Station where he tested human limits for space travel and laid the groundwork for a manned mission to Mars. Click HERE to sign up!
  • Ongoing: Stop by the office and take a photo of yourself as an astronaut! Also view the authentic NASA Spacesuit we have on display!
  • Tuesday March 20th, 3:00 pm at SLOCA SLOCA students only Q&A with Captain Kelly himself! The Captain Kelly Q&A will be followed by a presentation from two NASA astronauts to discuss the role of aero engineering within space travel.
  • Tuesday March 20th, 6:00 pm at the Performing Arts Center – Whet your appetite for Captain Kelly's talk and participate in a series of space-related activities before the event begins! We will have a space suit from NASA on display, a prototype of the first oxygen tank used in outer space, actual wheels from the Mars rover as well as activities that relate to the effects of gravity on the human body, life in space and the whys and hows of orbit. Be sure to bring your camera! In addition to these activities, we will also be selling Captain Kelly's books! After his performance is concluded Captain Kelly will be autographing them in the lobby.

Once again, CLICK HERE for tickets to see Captain Scott Kelly at the Performing Arts Center on March 20th, where you will learn from his incredible life experiences and be inspired to dare greatly!
