Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Attention Young SLO County Writers!

Happy Friday! Maybe you’ve heard about the Hanging Lantern Review, but today we want to share a bit more about this special publication, and an announcement regarding the upcoming issue:

Hello! I’m Hannah Thompson and I am serving on the Hanging Lantern Review staff as editor this year. The Hanging Lantern Review is SLOCA High School’s literary magazine. Every year we open submissions for essays, short stories, poems, and art. We choose the best and most interesting of these works to publish in the magazine. The writers whose work makes it into the magazine are invited to participate in our spring reading and release party, where we have a lot of fun celebrating the hard work of the writers and the staff. Getting work published in a real literary magazine is a wonderful opportunity for young writers on the central coast, and we encourage anyone from grades 7-12 to submit.

In years past, the submissions were all judged in a contest, but last year, our staff began curating the final pieces using an anonymous reading (meaning we read each submission without knowing the author’s name). This year is special because it is our 5-year anniversary! The Hanging Lantern Review has now been around for half a decade! We will be celebrating by making a special edition of the magazine. The main gist is this: if you are in grades 7-12, submit! We love reading your work and would be thrilled to publish your piece. If you are a parent of a youngster in grades 7-12, encourage them to submit! Read their drafts, offer gentle (and most importantly, helpful) criticism of their work, and cheer on their writing endeavors.

The Hanging Lantern Staff is looking forward to a fun and exciting year, and we hope you’ll make it even more fun and exciting by submitting some mighty fine work!

The deadline for submissions in NEXT Friday, January 20th. Click here for the guidelines.

Happy writing,
The Hanging Lantern Staff
