Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Family Games for Holiday Gatherings

{photos from sources linked below}

Today is the LAST day to enter our Down Home Giveaway for a chance to win a Coffee Card from the school store! All you have to do is tell us about one of your family’s holiday traditions (and we fixed the link so that you shouldn't need permission to access it):

Click here for all the details and to enter!

(Then check in with us over the break to see who wins.)

Maybe one of your traditions is to get together with family and friends at Christmas and play silly games…? So many fun memories can be made while laughing and playing a game together. If you’re one of those families (or if you want to be!) here are a few family-friendly game suggestions so you can have a jolly time during holiday gatherings:

1. Christmas Minute to Win It Games from Happiness is Homemade – These are popular with kids! This website is very thorough and includes printables and a scorecard and everything.

2. The Saran Wrap Ball Christmas Party Game from Must Have Mom – My own mom told me that we will be playing this game at her house on Monday. This link explains the game, but to warn you, she used a LOT of prizes – she must have a crowd! Here’s a video on how to make the ball (and it uses fewer items):

3. Heads or Tails White Elephant Gift Exchange Game from Play Party Plan – This version adds a fun twist to the traditional white elephant exchange.

4. Christmas Card Balderdash (and others) from Play Party Plan – My family loves Balderdash, and would probably love this game too!

5. Christmas Book Bingo from Good Life Eats – SLOCA loves games that incorporate books! You can use your family’s favorite holiday picture books for this one.

6. Guess that Smell Christmas Game from Kid Friendly Things To Do – Ahhh, Christmas smells! Why not turn them into a guessing game?

Bonus: Christmas Charades from Moms & Munchkins – A classic! Here’s a Christmas-themed list of things to act out.

Another bonus just for fun – look here to find your Elf name.

Game lovers, leave a comment below and share the game(s) your family plays together during the holidays – spread the fun!

One final time, here's an upcoming student performance you may want to attend:

Come enjoy Ballet Theatre! San Luis Obispo's world premiere of The Snow Queen, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, December 15-17.  This is a great holiday family activity.  Cast includes SLOCA students Kate Fisher (HS junior), Catherine Walz (Intermediate, Track A), and Ellie Godsey (Primary, Track B).  Amelia Walz (HS junior) is on the costume crew.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.bt-slo.org.

And here again is the list of holiday activities and events in SLO County – see the end of this blog post.

We know everyone is winding down now, so we will wrap up by wishing you and your family a very merry, wonder-filled season of good cheer. We hope you find time to play and celebrate together, as well as rest and recharge.

Down Home will be posting new content on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday next week – see you then!
