Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

“The father of a daughter is nothing but a high-class hostage. A father turns a stony face to his sons, berates them, shakes his antlers, paws the ground, snorts, runs them off into the underbrush, but when his daughter puts her arm over his shoulder and says, “Daddy, I need to ask you something,” he is a pat of butter in a hot frying pan.”

~Garrison Keillor

The Father-Daughter Dance is this weekend, and we wish all of our SLOCA dads and their girls a memorable and special date night!

Maybe the moms and boys can have a fun evening together too, while the dads and daughters are out. Moms, what do you and your son enjoy doing together? Let’s share some ideas! When my son and I hang out, his favorites are to go bowling, play a board game with me, draw a giant picture together (this is a stretch for me…) watch a “cheesy movie” together, or go out for pizza and arcade games. What about you? Leave a comment below!

Oh, and don't forget to set your clocks ahead this weekend…

Here once more are upcoming performances featuring some of our students. If you’re looking for a family outing and are interested in attending either of these events, you just might spot your child's fellow classmates on stage:

San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony Spring Concert – A number of SLOCA students are performing in this concert on Sunday March 12 at 4 pm.  Tickets can be purchased on the PAC website or at the door.  General admission is $15 and student tickets are $5.

Ballet Theatre – San Luis Obispo Youth Performance Showcase – Kate Fischer (Sophomore), Violet Talley (LMS, Track A), and Catherine Walz (Primary, Track A) are performing in this showcase on March 26 (6 pm) and 27 (3 pm). Tickets can be purchased on the bt-slo.org website.

And we also have one more event to let you know about:

SLO Film Fest screening of Hearing is Believing and live concert – Sunday, March 19th at 2:30 pm. This inspiring documentary tells the story of the young, sight-impaired piano virtuoso Rachel Flowers. She lives in Ventura County, but she has deep roots in SLO County. Both her parents and grandparents played in local bands and her grandparents owned a music store in Arroyo Grande. The movie is family-friendly, and there is a student discount ($10 – regular admission is $12). Following the movie, there will be a live concert by Rachel. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Enjoy the weekend, the sunshine, and all the special people in your life!
