“One learns by doing the thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.”
~ Sophocles
I think after last night’s fantastic Invention Convention, we can say with certainty that SLOCA kids have learned a thing or two! A lot of “doing” went into those science projects and into bringing it all together for our families to enjoy as a community. Wasn’t it great? We are always amazed when these events finally happen, at the variety of creative energy and learning that has taken place.
Give yourselves a pat on the back for hanging in there through the process, supporting and cheering on your kids, and showing up to engage with our students as they presented their invention projects. It’s been amazing to learn about so many inventions that have changed our world!
Now it’s time to take a deep breath and have a restful weekend. Whew! We know many of you will be writing progress reports, and we encourage you to try to appreciate this opportunity to reflect on the particular strengths, challenges, and growth of each of your kids. (Hey, the above quote can apply to writing progress reports as well, if you think of it…) It’s a time to notice and celebrate all the learning and character development that has taken place over the last few months, as well as to re-focus on what you want to work toward in Trimester 3. Though it can feel like simply another thing on the to-do list, it really is a privilege to use this tool to get to know our kids better, and to be connected to their education in this way. You’ve got this!
Looking ahead, here are a couple of opportunities to support SLOCA kids outside of school in their upcoming student performances. Please let us know if your student will be involved in these or other local events/performances so we can spread the word here on Fridays:
• San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony Spring Concert – A number of SLOCA students are performing in this concert on Sunday March 12 at 4 pm. Tickets can be purchased on the PAC website or at the door. General admission is $15 and student tickets are $5.
• Ballet Theatre – San Luis Obispo Youth Performance Showcase – Kate Fischer (Sophomore), Violet Talley (LMS, Track A), and Catherine Walz (Primary, Track A) are performing in this showcase on March 26 (6 pm) and 27 (3 pm). Tickets can be purchased on the bt-slo.org website.
