Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

“There is new life in the soil for every man. There is healing in the trees for tired minds and for our overburdened spirits, there is strength in the hills, if only we will lift up our eyes. Remember that nature is your great restorer.”

~ Calvin Coolidge

This weekend our UMS students head off on their Campertunity trip, and next weekend it will be the high school’s turn to go camping! We are thankful that these young people have the opportunity to get away together and find strength and restoration in nature. Have fun, kids!

We hope the rest of you staying home this weekend (or taking off on other adventures) will enjoy some excellent bonding time of your own, with those you care about.

Here’s an interesting find we wanted to share: for those who like watching historical “reality” series, there’s one on PBS right now that looks like it might have potential – it’s called “Victorian Slum House” (sounds inviting, right?). Along the same lines as earlier series such as “Colonial House,” “Frontier House,” and “Manor House,” this show takes 21st century participants into a recreated 1860s London tenement where they have to live like their impoverished ancestors, trying to earn a living while surviving on very little. Each episode jumps one decade, showing the growth and change that happened economically and socially.

A new episode airs each week and can be streamed on PBS’s website, although the first episode expires on May 30th.

We wish you a restful, restorative weekend!

And once more, here are the details for two performances coming up:

Carmina Burana – Saturday, May 20th at 8pm and Sunday, May 21st at 3pm. SLOCA high school sophomore Kate Fisher will be performing in this ballet, presented at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo. Tickets and information can be found at slomasterchorale.org, or by calling 805-756-4TIX.

Peter and the Wolf: Meet the Instruments of the Orchestra – May 30th, 11 am at the Vina Robles Amphitheater in Paso Robles. Kate Fisher is also dancing in this production, which is free for families and school groups! To RSVP, go to this website and click “Buy Tickets” but no purchase is necessary. Simply RSVP for your group and the number of people.
