Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Happy New Year – welcome to 2017!

Many of us know and love TED, the nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas through short, powerful talks. As you continue in “break mode” this week, perhaps watching a few TED talks for E&E might be on the agenda. Here are some we’ve posted in the past, as well as a few others that might interest those in the homeschooling world (as always, it’s a good idea to preview them or watch along with your kids):

Why Write? Penmanship for the 21st Century – We’ve shared this compelling talk before, on why teaching penmanship and cursive is so important. Check it out:

The Magic of Fibonacci numbers:

Underwater astonishments:

How to tie your shoes – Did you know you might have been tying your shoes wrong your whole life? Here’s a short, fun and informative lesson on this basic skill:

And here are a few TED playlists that offer even more powerful and intriguing talks:

Down Home wishes you a happy, healthy, learning-filled 2017. Enjoy the week!
