On Thursday in History we talked about Thomas Aquinas and looked at a list of a few of his famous quotes. We read over them and discussed what each of them might mean in our own words. The kids were amazing at this! One of the quotes was “Wonder is the desire of knowledge.” And one of the kids said, “Yah, that’s like when we were looking at the microscopes and it just made you want to learn more.” …… And another one of his quotes was, “If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever.” And one of the students shouted out, “That’s like Nemo! And how his dad wanted to keep him in that little space.” We agreed that Aquinas was saying that if safety was the highest goal, no one would take risks, and that that wouldn’t really be a kind of life worth living – just like the kind of life that Nemo’s dad originally wanted for him. And that’s the kind of connections these kids make all the time! Can you see why I love my job teaching at SLOCA?
