Our Fine Arts Focus series this year was coordinated and written by Janice Phillips. Thank you, Janice, for supplying us with these wonderful resources each month!
The poem for June is by a poet known for his nonsense: Edward Lear. The Jumblies (page 58 of your Classic Poetry) celebrates the silly things of life through great vocabulary, imagery, and just plain fun! Read it aloud with your students and I dare you not to giggle! The illustrations in Classic Poetry for this poem are charming. A fun exercise for students may be to imagine and draw what they think Jumblies would look like (and what are they, anyway?). Here is a wonderful print resource for younger students (at heart or by age!):
Poetry for Young People: Edward Lear
We have read poetry this year that inspired us, left us wondering, made us sad or hopeful, and even makes us smile. Do you have a favorite silly poem that makes you laugh? One of the earliest experiences I (Janice) had with poetry that amuses was On the Vanity of Earthly Greatness by Arthur Guiterman. See if your older students can find the ironic humor in those lines and crack a smile or two!
We are wrapping up another wonderful year at SLO Classical Academy. Are you inspired to finish strong and well? Sometimes laughter is the best medicine. I like a daily dose, personally!
