Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Magical Moments: Boys Basketball

Our athletics program is growing, and today we want to tell you a bit about how basketball is going! Here’s a update from Coach David Hazlebeck, and photos from a few of the recent games. Go SLOCA!

This winter, SLOCA is playing in a basketball league through the YMCA. We currently have two 10-12 year old boy’s teams and one 8-9 year old boy’s team. Our goal is to eventually expand basketball to all ages and both genders, but this year there was only enough interest for these teams. Look for sign-ups in September if you would like to play next winter! This year’s teams are all coming along really well. The vast majority of our players are playing for the first time ever.

The 8-9 year old team is called the Red Hawks. They are currently undefeated with four games left in the season. The league technically does not keep score at this level, but many parents do. They had their toughest challenge yet this past Saturday, and came through in the clutch. This team plays at 11 am on Saturdays at Pacheco Elementary School. It is located at 375 Ferrini Rd. in San Luis Obispo. We would love it if you came to support the team. They have games through the first of March (except February 15th).

One of our 10-12 year old teams is called the Lakers. This team, made up of almost all new players, is getting into a groove. They are still looking for their first win after a heartbreaking loss this past Saturday in their closest game of the season thus far. In the last few games they have had a lead early, but not been able to hold on to it down the stretch. Win or lose, we are very proud of all the boys on the team. We are very thankful that Kyle Kwiatek is volunteering to coach this team for our school. This team plays at 1 pm on Saturdays at Taylor gym. It is located at 1500 Lizzie St. in San Luis Obispo. Feel free to come support our boys and help them get their first win. They have games through the first of March (except February 15th).

Our final team is a second 10-12 year old boys team called the Clippers. This team is currently 4-1. I am proud of the fact that every single player has scored a bucket on this team, but even more proud of the hard defensive effort that is put into every single game. Offense can often be a two person game in basketball, but every player is vital on defense to have a championship winning team. This team plays at 2 pm on Saturdays at Taylor gym (right after the Lakers). Again, it is located at 1500 Lizzie St. It would be awesome to see you at one of the games. They have games through the first of March (except February 15).

Thanks to Paul Hazlebeck and Vanessa Shevlin, two Cal Poly students who are volunteering to help out with the younger team. A big thank you also to Dale Barrett and Tim Theule who were able to step in and coach two of the teams while Cal Poly was on break.
