History Day is three weeks away (June 5th), and that means costumes! We will be getting into the spirit of the Middle Ages at our Medieval Feast, and although it does take a little extra effort to dress the part, it’s so worth it when we’re all celebrating the year together in costume, bringing history to life for our kids.
Today we have three handy tips to share that can help you put together costumes for your family:
1. You may be able to use most or part of the costumes you wore for our Viking history day, with a few minor changes. Tunics and leggings are very versatile! Perhaps adding or removing a few layers, or changing up accessories (a leather belt, a pouch, simple jewelry, a cap, a hood), or a few creative touches of fabric paint is all you need to turn a Viking costume into a Medieval peasant or nobleman outfit.

2. Visit SLOCA’s Medieval Costumes Pinterest page. You’ll find lots of ideas, instructions, and pictures! We are adding to this page all the time, so come look for inspiration and guidance. For example, we’ve pinned this awesome no-sew knight’s tunic that couldn’t be easier to make:

3. Shop at Fred and Betty’s! You can find inexpensive pieces there that can be used or altered to assemble appropriate vestments for the occasion. If you know how to sew, the possibilities are endless! For example, check out how The Costume Mom upcycled a thrift store dress:
