San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Free Friday: February 19, 2016

It’s Free Friday! Or Free By Five Friday, as we sometimes call it. The “free” of course is just a reminder to make some free time for connecting with loved ones, “free” of personal devices and distracting electronics. The “five” is only a suggestion… start whenever it works for your family. Maybe you can only find an hour over the weekend, or maybe you can make a whole afternoon or evening of it. This is counter-cultural and often a sacrifice, but it’s well worth the effort. Whatever time you set aside for meaningful, technology-free interaction will be an investment in your family.

And speaking of meaningful interaction, tonight is our next Parent Book Club meeting! And this time we are all getting together in SLO, at the SLOCA office at 7 pm. We hope you’ve enjoyed Walden, and we look forward to discussing this book again with all interested parents tonight. Even if you didn’t finish the book, come and share thoughts, be inspired, and enjoy a yummy treat or two!

Finally, here are a couple of ways you can support SLOCA students this weekend:

  • Poetry Our Loud County Competition – Congratulations to senior Virginia Harding, who has been selected to represent sloCAHS at the Poetry Out Loud event for San Luis Obispo County. Virginia astounded judges and audience members alike with her recitation of Lady Margaret Cavendish's “An Apology for her Poetry,” and Percy Shelley's sonnet “Ozymandias.” On Friday, February 19th Virginia will be reciting with students from across the county at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 2201 Lawton Avenue in San Luis Obispo. The event will run from 7-9 PM. Come out and support Virginia and our high school poetry program!

  • First Annual Valentines Junior Olympic Archery Development Tournament – Saturday, February 20th on the Madonna Ranch starting at 10 am. See this week's earlier blog post for all the info!
