Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Wednesday Wonders: High School Highlights

Doesn’t it feel like there’s so much happening as the end of the year comes rushing towards us? It’s the same up at SLO Classical Academy High School, and we want to share a few special, wonder-full things they’ve been up to recently:

Senior Projects
In April, our Seniors presented their Senior Projects – Down Home will be featuring their projects in a three-part series starting tomorrow, but we wanted to share an observation made by our Middle School Latin teacher, Pam Gerhardt, after she attended the presentations. She wrote these lovely words to her students’ families in the weekly grid:

“As I sat and listened to the Senior Project Presentations this last week, I was struck by the growth of each of these students and the beautiful minds that have developed over time as these students have spent their formative years at SLOCA. I wish all of our parents could have attended as each student represented a family willing to take the long view and invest in their children’s education and in this community. They are now getting a glimpse of the rewards of such an investment. I hope each of you continues to make the investment and the sacrifice to give your children what surely is a rich classical education and a chance at a mind that can not only think critically but is truly beautiful. What a rare gift.”

Come back tomorrow to get a peek at these Senior Projects!

Spirit Week
During the last week of April our entire school celebrated Spirit Week, which was a blast. The High School really went all out with costumes, decorations, videos, friendly pranks, and competitions between the houses. Our students undeniably displayed tons of school spirit! There are too many photos to share, but here are a few fun shots from “Roaring 20s Day” and “Favorite Character Day:”

Taco Classic and Color Dance
Spirit Week culminated in an epic Ultimate Frisbee game (called the Taco Classic) followed by a burrito feast and then a Color Dance. What’s a Color Dance? The students each had a bag of colored chalk, and when given the go signal, they grabbed handfuls and threw it up in the air and all over each other, while dancing to energetic music in the SLOCA parking lot. This was a first for our school – talk about memories and messy, crazy fun! (It was pretty entertaining for the adults who were looking on from the sidelines, too!) Here are a few more photos from these events:
