Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Picture Day!

picture day preschoolers

One of the many exciting days here at SLOCA is our annual picture day. Every year, students come in dressed in their “Sunday’s best.” Parents drop them off in hopes that Cameron Ingalls, our photographer, get that perfect, “just-the-right” smile of their student. After all, this is THE photo that will go into that coveted yearbook.

What we sometimes neglect to see in the midst of “getting it just right,” are the wondrous moments in between. The rearranging of school day schedules our teachers have to do in order for the photo sessions to happen. The Safety Team and parent helpers creating a safe and smooth transition for each class navigating our halls to and from the MPR. The encouraging greetings that occur as one class leaves and another enters. The beautiful, often funny, conversations between the kids while they wait in line for their turn. The way our photographer engages our students to create that authentic smile so true joy exudes from those images.

There’s truly a lot more to it than simply calling it “Picture Day.” We’ll have some of our youngest students demonstrate it for you below. Thank you, Jessica Wilson, for these WONDERful photos.
