Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Academy Clubs & Classes with Kristina Doles

Happy New Year, everyone!!! With a brand new year comes fresh perspective and exciting possibilities! In the spirit of setting goals and trying new things this year, we’re thrilled to have our Enrichment Coordinator, Kristina Doles, join us today to reveal what the Academy Clubs & Classes have been up to this past trimester and to invite you to join in what’s coming up for Trimester 2.

Earlier this week on the blog, there were tips on goal setting with your child. If one of those goals involved learning something new, making new friends, or having more fun, our Academy Classes and Clubs (ACs) might be just the thing! For those of you who are unfamiliar with ACs, they are our enrichment program that runs 8 weeks out of the trimester on Friday afternoons.  First through fourth-grade students participate in a wide variety of hour-long classes. What’s offered each trimester changes so these students are constantly learning something new! Students from 4th through 8th grade can join clubs. With 1.5 hour blocks of time and a year-long commitment, clubs are the perfect place to dive deeper into a subject and really build skills in an area of interest.

Students and teachers had a great time last trimester but don’t take my word for it.  See for yourself! In the following slideshow, you’ll see students participating in the following:

Classes:

Intro to Astronomy, Crazy 8’s Math Club, Basics of Engineering, Jewelry Making, Painting, Beginning Gymnastics, Ninja Warrior Training, Theater, Nature Journaling, Educational Games, Intro to Coding

Clubs:

Archery, Theater, Science Bowl, Debate, Improv, Robotics, Open Studio, Painting on Canvas

I’m happy to announce that we’ll have some new faces on our AC teaching team this winter. Sharing their artistic talents and having fun along the way, we have Caroline Langford (hand lettering, macrame, and fiber arts), Sandra Ronda (painting), Meg Roberts (sewing)  Heather MacLeod (theater) and Laurie Rossi (painting). You may recognize a few of those names as belonging to people who are already part of our SLOCA community. If you are interested in teaching a class or club, please get in touch with me. Teaching ACs is a great way to complete your volunteer hours.

We are mid-year with our Academy Clubs (4th-8th grade) but students are welcome to join when space is available. For those who signed up for clubs in the fall, you’re all set for the full year. No need to register, email, anything!

Registration for the new session of Academy Classes (1st-4th grade) will be up and running soon.  For those with students enrolled for the full day on Fridays, you get the first crack at sign-ups and will receive a link via email on Thursday, January 3rd.  If you’re looking to sign your student up for ACs only, keep your eyes peeled for Bear Necessities released on Tuesday, January 8th. We’re looking forward to another enriching and fun-filled session!

Questions? Ideas? Just want to say hi?  Send me an email at [email protected].

Thanks for sharing with us, Kristina! From the looks of those photos, it’s clear that our students are not only learning something new but they are having a blast doing it!
