Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

The Character Issue

We’re back with our next Character Issue of the year! There are many ways to practice humility in our everyday lives. As a homeschooling community, we can guarantee that opportunities for this arise daily, if not, hourly. For those of you with children in sports, dance, or any other activity involving any level of competition, we can bet you’re also nodding yes to the many situations you can see this trait exercised.

Before we get to a couple of examples of how to highlight this trait in our homes, let’s first define what it means.

Humility means knowing, accepting and being who we are while demonstrating modesty about our accomplishments and gifts, admitting mistakes and valuing others for who they are and for their input. Our catch phrase: Admit mistakes and cheer others on.

“One way to nurture this character trait in everyday life is to use the above catchphrase as a practical tool – let’s all practice admitting mistakes and cheering others on! This can be applied to many situations and is something even very young children can understand and work on. It’s also a good tool for discussing the difference between humility and humiliation (which is not what we want to instill!). If your child is involved in a sport, that’s another easy opportunity to work on admitting mistakes, being modest about accomplishments, and cheering others on.”

Thank you again {Sabina Zink} for your beautiful artwork! Here’s her Humility installment from her Senior Project last year:

How do YOU encourage humility at home? We’d love to hear your thoughts! Please share on the comments below!
