Monday Mix-Ins: Jim Crow Laws and Women’s Suffrage

Here are a few optional links about Jim Crow laws and Women’s Suffrage, both of which were huge civil rights issues in the years following the Civil War and Reconstruction. We tried not to include resources that contained disturbing content, but as always, please preview the following for your children:

What were the Jim Crow Laws? – This is a short video lesson for kids that is well done, and includes photographs:

 

The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow – This 4 minute video is a clip from a longer PBS documentary, explaining the era of Jim Crow. It does go into the 20th century and touches on Civil Rights during that time as well, which shows kids the far-reaching effects of these dreadful laws:

Anthony’s speech written after her arrest for illegally voting in the 1872 presidential election.  In the several months between her indictment and her trial she traveled to various towns, speaking to gain support for her position:
