For the month of December, we will be emphasizing the character trait of Kindness. One way to define kindness is:
Recognizing that relationships are core to who we are becoming, and therefore being tender, courteous, helpful, forgiving and compassionate towards others and self. Looking for the goodness in all. Being unselfish and generous.
Naturally, the holidays are a wonderful time to devote to kindness both within our families and to those in our community. There are many opportunities to give to those in need at this time of year (such as donating a toy to the “OPERATION SANTA CLAUS 2012” toy drive, in the school office). It’s healthy for our kids to spend some time focusing on others rather than just compiling their own Christmas wish lists, right?
We have something to share that will help nurture kindness within the family, too. Recently, our Track A Kindergarten teacher, Mary Knudson, sent an attachment about kindness that we thought worthy of passing on to everyone. It’s a creative and delightful list of ways to show kindness to your child and it’s chock full of ideas that you will enjoy as much as they will! We all know the best way to teach character is to model it ourselves, so download this pdf and have fun showing kindness to your kids:
Let’s talk: How do you foster kindness in your home? Got any great ideas for nurturing sibling kindness, or showing kindness to those in our community? Leave a comment and be entered into a drawing for a gift card to Jamba Juice. You can show kindness by treating someone to a smoothie! The drawing will close on Monday evening, so get those comments in soon!
