Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Sport Stacking

If you've been researching summer activities, and you’re looking for fun ways to keep the kids entertained between summer camps and beach days, here’s an interesting and maybe slightly quirky option you may not have heard of: Sport Stacking. Yes, it’s stacking cups, but it’s more than what it seems. The best way to know what it’s all about is to see it: watch the videos here and here and read about this fascinating worldwide sport! (There are many more sport stacking videos on youtube, as well.) It’s fun to watch, and it is truly amazing how fast some kids are at it.

Even if your kids don’t want to train for competition, they might just enjoy stacking those cups and trying to improve their time. It’s fun for athletes and non-athletes alike. Plus, sport stacking has many benefits, such as improving hand-eye coordination, using both sides of the brain, increasing bilateral coordination, improving concentration, and more. You can read research and articles about the benefits of sport stacking here

If nothing else, sport stacking could be an amusing alternative to summertime boredom! A basic set of cups isn't very expensive and can be purchased here or you can search online for other suppliers.

My family found out about Sport Stacking through a friend who bought another product called Brain in a Bag – this kit is more expensive, but full of cool things for kids to do that encourage whole brain thinking. It’s intriguing – check it out if you want to know more.

What interesting or different activities do your kids like to do? Let’s share ideas and options for summertime fun!
