Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Summer 2013: Play – Excavate Frozen Treasure

{source}

Here’s a great Play idea for younger kids on a hot day – Excavate frozen treasure! (Thank you Counting Coconuts for this fun activity.) Keep the kids busy and beat the heat with this simple and inexpensive project:

  • Fill a plastic container with water.
  • Add in small waterproof toys, and any interesting objects from around the house.
  • Put the container in the freezer, wait 15 minutes, then add drops of food coloring or water color paint. It’s important to wait until the water starts to freeze, so that your colors won’t mix and turn the whole thing brown.
  • When the tub is frozen solid, remove it and take it outside.
  • Give your kids some tools, such as spoons, toothbrushes, child-safe hammers, sticks, etc. They can then dig and excavate for their treasures!
  • You can give them cups of warm water to help melt the ice. For even more entertainment, give them watercolors so they can paint the ice while they dig.

So fun – give it a try!
