Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Progress Report Notes (and a fun night ahead… no strudel required!)

{photo by Jenny Bischoff}

Today we have a quick tip for you that could come in handy when the end of the trimester rolls around and it’s time to write progress reports! One of our new moms actually came up with this idea, and we thought it was so clever that others might appreciate it as well:

Each week as you work with your children at home, jot down any notes about their struggles, breakthroughs, improvements, extra books they read, E&E time, etc, right on your weekly grids. Stash the grids for that trimester in a file folder or other convenient place when you’re done with that week. When it’s time to write progress reports and you’re trying to think of strengths and weaknesses, or progress that was made, you can flip back through your grids and read your notes.

If you have any handy tips for homeschool days or SLOCA routines, please email them to Down Home and we may share them on the blog!

We also want to share a message with you from Maren Milligan, who is here visiting and will be hosting a fun night for parents to connect next week:

A Few of Our Favorite Things… food, laughter, connecting! You do NOT have to make a strudel! Read on…

Who needs a good laugh? A breath of fresh air? Anyone want to make a new acquaintance? Do you ever feel like everyone else is a professional swimmer and you are just dog paddlin’ your very best?

Please join us for a night of fresh connections, a bit of laughter and of course some treats.

Have you heard of the song, “These are a Few of my Favorite Things”? You know, “Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudel…..Brown paper packages tied up with string”….. well that corny song was the inspiration for this evening!

Our hope for this night is that each parent will leave the evening knowing one new person to talk with at the flag pole or in the parking lot at pick up time.

The other hope would be that no one leaves the building thinking everyone else knows more than they do, has it all together, understands the full scope of history, has Singapore mastered or even knows how to download and keep track of grids. We are all such a work in progress and if we can’t laugh about it, we are going to cry! Let’s laugh.

It is going to be night where I will be sharing some of my favorite things about SLOCA. I will also be sharing some of my top parent/teacher “Fails”. (If anyone hasn’t Googled “Pinterest Fails”… do that now for a great laugh.) I have some personal classroom teaching “fails” and some classic mom fails that should get the conversations/laughter flowing.

Special note to families that have been here one year or less….. we need you! Did you know that new families are often the most effective at building community? Fresh ideas, personalities and perspectives bring life to school gatherings. The school is looking forward to getting to know you and these are the places that help you connect.

DETAILS:

Tuesday October 1st at 6:30

Optional to bring:

One of your favorite things to eat. (Just a single serving bag, nothing big or fancy.)

But If you don’t have something and life got a bit hectic, come anyway… we will have spare. This is just for fun!

Maren Milligan and many other helpers

You'll meet our next amazing group of Friday Faces tomorrow, so it's time to make a guess – of the teachers who work with our Kindergarten students, which one do you think has a degree in Psychology? Leave a comment and see if you're right when you come back tomorrow!
