Tomorrow is the first of November, and our character trait for the month will (appropriately) be Gratitude:
Being thankful and showing appreciation for those in our lives and for what we have and receive.
Down Home received a lovely note earlier in the school year from SLOCA mom Veronica Womack, and although it would certainly qualify as a Magical Moment, it also brought to mind this month’s character trait of Gratitude. Veronica and her husband Larry are a Track B family with daughters Carina (B4, UMS) and Kylee (Primary). This is their family’s 6th year at SLO Classical Academy. Veronica writes:
As my middle-schooler matures, I've decided to make a more concerted effort this year to recognize the growth that I'm seeing outside of academic subjects. Sometimes I spend so much one-on-one time with her, that I forget to step back and see this growth. My oldest made her lunches all last year, but this morning she decided to take care of mom and sister when she saw me struggle to get out of the house on the first day of school. She got up early and by the time I was up, she told me lunches were made for all of us and in the refrigerator. We made it on time, and I assumed I would have crackers for lunch. Instead, I got this beautiful and healthy lunch (filled with all of my favorites) which clearly required thought and effort. It even came with a note! She showed me that Responsibility, Gratitude, Respect, and Kindness were not just SLOCA buzz words, but character traits that she takes to heart.

How awesome! Thanks for sharing this with us, Veronica. Not only were you grateful to your daughter for her kindness and thoughtfulness, she is clearly very thankful for all you do. We also appreciate the reminder to stop and recognize character growth in our children…
Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.
