Today’s Magical Moment comes from SLOCA mom Joy Newman. Joy and her husband Cade are on Track A with their four children: Eli (LMS), Abraham (Primary), Esther (Primary) and Ezra (2 years old). This is their 6th year at SLO Classical Academy, and they have a fun story to share with us today:
Poem memorization and recitation are a part of our SLOCA life. The Primary students are regularly choosing poems, memorizing them and reciting them in front of class. It is a very sweet part of our education.
Our daughter, who is a Primary I, chose The Ice Cream Man by Rachel Field as her first poem of the year:
When summer's in the city,
And brick's a blaze of heat,
The Ice-Cream Man with his little cart
Goes trundling down the street.
Beneath his round umbrella,
Oh, what a joyful sight,
To see him fill the cones with mounds
Of cooling brown or white:
Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry,
Or chilly things to drink
From bottles full of frosty-fizz
Green, orange, white or pink.
His cart might be a flower bed
Of roses or sweet peas,
The way the children cluster round
As thick as honey bees.
A couple of weeks ago, the Sunday before her recitation turn, guess who comes trundling into our neighborhood? Yes! The Ice Cream Man! The kids grabbed their wallets (they buy their own) and they raced outside to place their order. I couldn’t resist letting the ice cream man know that my daughter had memorized a poem about the ice cream man! Esther recited her poem and the ice cream man was so tickled. He autographed a business card and even posed for a picture. It was an unexpected magical moment for our family.
Thanks for sharing, Joy – this is adorable and what a great memory!
