While perusing the long-ago archives of our SLOCA blog, I came across this quote on the value of history, and thought it worth sharing again. We do make a big deal about history around here, and especially right now In light of our history-centered celebration tomorrow evening!
History is the backbone of a classical education; it is woven throughout each subject. We study history chronologically at SLO Classical Academy, and some may wonder why we we focus on history in this way. Here’s one thought-provoking response:
The problem with history is that there's so much of it: more than enough to cherry-pick for propaganda purposes, too much to grasp comprehensively. The response is often cynicism or indifference: What does it matter whether Gettysburg came before Appomattox, anyway?
My answer is that a well-furnished mind is full of labeled shelves for receiving new knowledge, and the more shelves (i.e., context) you have, the more you'll understand. This includes chronology, as well as biography, philosophy, economics, etc. Or, as one website commentator remarked, history is the Swiss Army knife of education—relatively easy to acquire, endlessly handy for all disciplines.

Our kids are building those those shelves and stacking them with rich knowledge that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Let’s celebrate that tomorrow!
Not only will we come together for our Night at the Museum tomorrow evening from 5:45-8:00 pm, but tomorrow is also our very last day of Friday Faces. You’ll meet a few faces you may not know, who play a very important role in our school… come back tomorrow to see who they are!
