San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Our first two weeks of the new trimester have been delightfully engaging, and now the week is drawing to a close. It’s time to shift our focus to all those special traditions with family and friends, and celebrating the holidays! Down Home will take the week of Christmas off, but will post on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the weeks before and after Christmas.

If you have a high school or middle school student who enjoys writing, we have a splendid suggestion for how to spend some of the upcoming break: Announcing the second-annual Hanging Lantern Review Writing Contest!

Do you know about Hanging Lantern Review? It’s an online literary arts/culture blog and annual print magazine showcasing the talents and ideas of young adults throughout SLO County. It’s hosted and produced by the students of San Luis Obispo Classical Academy High School, to promote the literary arts among high school and middle school students.

The writing contest opened this week on December 11th and work can be submitted up until February 14th, 2014. They are accepting poetry, fiction, and non-fiction/essay from Central Coast students in grades 7-12. Winners will be announced April 1st, 2014.

The contest provides a fantastic opportunity for young writers. Winners and honorable mentions will be published in Volume 2 of Hanging Lantern Review print magazine, to be released in May of 2014. In addition to receiving a copy of the publication, first, second and third place winners will be invited to participate in an exclusive literature reading and reception in the spring, and may be published on the Hanging Lantern Review blog. Check out their blog for more details on the contest and submission guidelines.
