What better represents resourcefulness in action than a thrift store? Today we are delighted to hear from our Fred & Betty’s manager, Lillie Lamm, who writes in to give us an update on our school’s thrift store, and to let us know how we can continue to provide and be resources for this very important business:
Resourcefulness is key down at Fred & Betty’s. From the beginning it has been an adventure and often times we weren’t sure what to expect next! With the help of many local resources, SLOCA staff and families, Fred & Betty’s has grown into a fully functioning business over the past six months. Like any small business, we have our ebbs and flows in terms of sales. We are constantly thinking up new ideas to make our store a fun and affordable experience for shoppers. We want to continue to spread the word about our awesome thrift store, both to encourage shoppers and donors. So please keep shopping with us, bringing your donations, and telling your friends far and wide!
Are you finished with your volunteer hours? We could certainly use your help! Ongoing volunteer tasks include hanging clothes, taking donations to Goodwill, cleaning and organizing, windexing doors and windows, and chipping away at the attic project.

And now that we’ve gotten the swing of things here at Fred and Betty’s we are ready to pick up where we left off on our renovation projects! Please see below for specific projects:
- Staining pallet wood for front room
- Hanging pallet wood in front room (construction expertise required)
- Removing plant in front of store – includes digging up dead plant from pot and disposing of it
- Installing video cameras in store (some expertise required)
- Staining giant spools in store (would be a Saturday evening/Sunday project)
-
Scraping paint off windows (interior and exterior)
-
Building plywood toppers for clothing fixtures
*If anyone has plywood that is 4'7″ X 3'2″ or larger and would like to donate it to our project please contact Lillie!
Our Attic Project involves:
- Removing electronics from attic and bringing them to E-waste recycling center at Goodwill
- Dump runs! A lot of the attic contents will need to be taken to the dump. A truck or trailer would be ideal since much of the contents are very dusty.
A big thank you to our donors, customers, and volunteers!

Thanks, Lillie! We entreat all our parents who have some time to pitch in and be part of the wonderful things happening down at Fred & Betty’s. It's a fun and easy way to fulfill your volunteer hours! Here's an idea: drop off the kids at school, grab coffee with another mom or two, then all head down to Fred & Betty's for a few hours before lunch!
Let’s show resourcefulness with our time, our donations, and where we shop – the success of our thrift store helps our school is so many ways.
