Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Summer 2014: Heroic Quest and Medieval Tournament

{source}

Happy Fourth of July! In the spirit of our usual “Free by Five” Friday theme, we wish you all a wonderful holiday celebrating with family and friends. Enjoy some time today away from electronics to focus on relationships and relaxing.

And because it's Friday, that means a peek into the FUTURE! This summer on Fridays Down Home will offer you glimpses into some of the amazing things we have planned for our upcoming school year. We hope you will be enticed by and excited about what’s ahead:

First up, our Development Director Cozy Faber has some info for us about next year’s Heroic Quest and Ultimate Medieval Tournament:

For our 2014-2015 school year, our kid-driven fundraiser will take place during the perfectly alliterative Medieval Month of March!  This magnificent effort has a dual focus of having students fulfill a quest to identify and exemplify SLOCA character traits while helping to raise funds to fill the coffers.  The enterprise will culminate in an Ultimate Medieval Tourney—certainly a grand way to celebrate our quest fulfillment!

Details are rough but plans are underway and include the following:

  • Each SLOCA knight will be assigned a quest to identify a specific character trait in their world. (Bring in a quote, article, photo or write a paragraph on something they did etc.)
  • The money raised through this fundraiser supports the programs that SLOCA has in place to foster the fine character building that is purposefully practiced in every crevice at our school.  The financial goal for each family is to raise $200.
  • As we attain each designated milestone, a banner, which will feature a character trait, will be issued to the school as a badge to represent the efforts of our SLOCA knights.
  • The celebration of quest fulfillment: a Medieval Tournament! Teams of knights working together across grades and tracks as they participate in a series of Medievally motivated activities.

If you are interested in helping with the planning or execution of this fabulous day, please email Cozy Faber ([email protected]).
