Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Magical Moments: Outdoor Art Party

{all photos by Jenny Curzan}

Happy Monday! Today’s Magical Moment is contributed by one of our Track B parents, Jenny Curzan. She and her husband J.P. have 2 kids: Michael in LMS and daughter Madeleine (age 1-1/2). This is their 5th year at SLO Classical Academy. Jenny and a few other Track B LMS moms organized a memorable event around a school art project, and she writes to share the experience:

The LMS classes were assigned a fun project for art and since it called for messy, creative materials, we decided to make an outdoor art party out of it!

For the big kids:

We found literature from a few years ago Marguerite makes a Book by Bruce Robertson – and reread it to get inspired on how to make colors from non-art materials.  We added paper, non-art art supplies like condiments, spices, cupcake sprinkles, vitamins, beauty products and egg whites.  The kids mixed colors from “scratch” to create their art color wheel featuring pure, tint, shade or neutral.  It was a hit and the kids really had fun!

For the little kids:

We had a pinto bean bin, bead threading, a water table, crayons and paper for coloring.  Even the 1 year old had fun creating art and exploring textures and patterns.

We had the best day!  The kids had a blast and it was indeed a magical afternoon!

Awesome! Thanks Jenny, for taking a few photos and writing to Down Home to share this fun time connecting through art and learning together.

If you have a Magical Moment we could include on the blog, please email us at [email protected] and tell us about it! We love featuring experiences like this one, as well as small homeschool victories or memorable learning connections made at home or at school.
