Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Magical Moments: SLOCA Surf Club

{photo by Alysia Moreno}

Did you know that SLOCA has a Surf Club? They met for the first time in November, and it was such a wonderful experience, they wanted to share about this Magical Moment with our community! Primary student Ruby Moreno came up with the idea to start this club, and today she and her mom Alysia want to tell us about their first gathering. Alysia and Javier Moreno are a Track B family in the third year at SLOCA, with children Ruby (Primary) and Olivia (Kindergarten).

Q: How did you come up with the idea of a Surf Club?

Ruby: Well, I had been wishing that I had friends that would want to surf with me. Then, I was thinking about my friends at school and that it would be cool if we could start a club. I asked my Mom if we could do that and she checked with the school and they said yes and that is how surf club began!

Q: Who is Surf Club for?

Ruby: It is for everyone. It does not matter what grade you are in or how good you are at surfing. Some of the smaller kids just played in the shore and the teenagers were a lot deeper than us. I think it is for anyone that wants to have fun in the ocean!

Q: What was your favorite part about the first Surf Club gathering?

Ruby: My favorite part was being with my friends and getting to share my love of the ocean with them. I also really like catching waves with my friends!

We asked some of the other kids that came to Surf Club what their favorite part was and this is what they had to say….

” I loved it! It was great to have free time to play on the beach and guided surf club time too.”

~Anais Currie, Primary

“I liked it when the big man taught us how to surf.  I liked when he told us to lay down on the board and jump up on it.  I was in between 2 big kids so that was fun.  I also liked playing on the boogie board in the ocean.”

~Annabelle Collins, Kinder

“Payton loved the fact that he learned how to surf and Tobin loved ’practicing’ (doing the lesson on shore).”

~Mary Knudson with Payton, Primary and Tobin Kinder

“I really enjoyed the surf instruction from Van Curaza, but my favorite part of the day was being in the water with the other SLOCA kids. This will be a great way for us to build friendships outside of school.”

~David Gibson, Intermediate

“My favorite part was being with friends and playing in the water.”

Our first Surf Club gathering was so much fun! There were kids there from Kindergarten to High School! It was amazing to watch kids with little experience in the water standing on a surf board for the first time! It is really a club for the whole family.

At the first gathering we had instruction from Van Curaza of Van Curaza Surf School. He will be back in January with us and offering surf lessons to families interested for $10. There will be more information on that coming soon.

If you are interested in coming but don't have a wetsuit or surf board don't worry, we have extra. We also have experienced parents there to give guidance. This is not a drop off event, a parent must be there with their children. Our club meets on the second Saturday of each month in Morro Bay at 8:30.  We meet at Morro Rock at a location hidden from view behind the sand dunes. Turn right on the small dirt road just before the main parking lot, across from Coleman Park. Look for the SLOCA table and sign.

Mark your calendar for the next two gatherings: December 13th and January 10th. To stay updated about the latest Surf Club news, you can like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/slocasurf.
