Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Holiday Crafting with Kids

{photo by Brandy Potts}

As a special treat, today we hear from guest blogger Lindsey Cheney. Lindsey and her husband Sean are a Track A family with three children: Gracie (Intermediate), Lily (Primary), and Silas (Kindergarten). They are in their 5th year at SLOCA, and Lindsey also owns her own sewing business, The Pleated Poppy. This crafty mom has some fun project ideas to share with us:

i'm kind of picky about kid's crafts.  there i said it.  i don't love the idea of doing a craft just to fill time.  i like it to be beautiful, and something i want to hang up or set out in my house.  no, it doesn't have to be perfect.  but aesthetically pleasing?  yes!

i gathered together a handful of crafts for a range of ages.  all of these would be great for your home, or to gift to others.

(clockwise, from top left)

– i have had these paper scrap trees on my craft list for a long time!  even though the original creator made them with specially cut paper pieces, i think you could easily do other shapes as well, like circles, or strips of paper.

– these covered button gift tags are so fun!  the buttons come in an inexpensive kit, and kids as young as 4 or 5 can even make them. just hot glue to a manila gift tag (found at office supply stores).

– at our school we treasure our literature, but maybe head out to the thrift store and get a poorly written paperback book for this one!

 – this would be a great craft for littles.  you can cut the strips for them and let them glue, or they can work on their cutting skills.

– gluing buttons doesn't get much easier!  you can make it your own with different colors or background papers.

– adorable snowmen, that also make reusable gifts!

– this is a fun craft with paper straws that maybe the older kids want to tackle

– i think a collection of these pinecones along a mantle would be awesome!

so there you have it!  keep your kids busy over the break with some creative juices flying.  remember when buying supplies to remember your coupons!  you can google coupons for local stores like beverly's, michael's, and joann's, and they all take competitor's coupons.  40% off is a pretty nice discount!

Thank you Lindsey – these look gorgeous!
