Our Primary students recently read the book Tales Told in Tents: Stories from Central Asia by Sally Pomme Clayton, and they thoroughly enjoyed these wonderful tales. The author is a storyteller who travelled through Central Asia, hearing many stories as she made her way through these countries. She gathered 12 of them and wrote them down in a book.
One of the stories they read was called The Secret of Felt (from Turkmenistan). To help bring the story to life, the teachers decided to make felt in class. The kids took wool and separated different colors into thin pieces and layered them on top of each other. Next, they placed the wool in warm water. Pressure was applied with bamboo mats or by hand with a towel. Excess water was removed and the felt was left to dry. The kids LOVED this activity!
