Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

It rots the senses in the head!

It kills imagination dead!

It clogs and clutters up the mind!

It makes a child so dull and blind

He can no longer understand

A fantasy, a fairyland!

His brain becomes as soft as cheese!

His powers of thinking rust and freeze!

He cannot think – he only sees!

~ Roald Dahl

This humorous poem (or Oompa-Loompa song) is about a character from the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Remember Mike Teavee? It can make us laugh while also considering the unfortunate consequences of too much screen time, and why it’s so important to read books and engage the mind. We would add other pursuits in there as well, but this is definitely a fun one to share with kids – if you do Poetry teatime or Family night in your home (or even if you don’t), this might be something you’ll enjoy reading aloud to them with enthusiasm!

Here’s a link to the whole poem:

We wish you a weekend full of rest, good books, and good times with family and friends.
