Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Magical Moments: The Quest Continues

{photo by Kary Antoniadis}

Today’s Magical Moment comes from Track B family Jimi and Kary Antoniadis, with daughter Antonia in Primary. After our Heroic Quest cleanup of downtown SLO, Kary wrote the following email to Cozy Faber, our Development Director and the amazing, organizing force behind our heroic fundraiser:

Hi Cozy…. Thank you again to you and your team for organizing such a great fundraiser. The element of performing heroic tasks really motivated Antonia and the people who donated to the school. She had a wonderful time working with her peers this afternoon…. However, the areas we scouted didn't yield as much garbage as we thought it would.

We were inspired though, and made a ” team” decision to take the quest north… North county that is. Late in the afternoon we headed back home to Paso Robles and our favorite park, Barney Schwartz. We spent the next hour (86 degrees outside!) picking up LOTS of interesting and gross things. Antonia was especially pleased to pick out plastic bags and fishing line from the pond – thus preventing the turtles and fish that live there from choking or a worse fate.

It was a fulfilling day and I truly believe it lit a spark to pursue further good.

Thank you again,

Kary, Jimi and Antonia Antoniadis

Kary also shared this with Down Home after she sent the email above:

…halfway through our cleanup in Paso, I asked Antonia if she was too hot or wanted to stop – she told me “no….I'm doing this for somebody special…” But she wouldn't tell me who.

Only later that evening did she tell me she was dedicating her work to her “Papou” – her grandfather who passed away one month ago. Just love my little girl!

Thank YOU, Kary, for sharing this with us! We know many of our kids were truly inspired by helping others during this Heroic Quest fundraiser. It's even more magical that Antonia connected her service to a special loved one. We hope the desire to better our community and world will continue to grow and motivate our students, just as it did for her!
