I sometimes wonder whether all pleasures are not substitutes for joy.
~ C.S. Lewis
What a thoughtful quote to chew on for awhile…
As we think about the long weekend ahead and how to connect with our families, how can we focus on spending time together pursuing activities that cultivate joy? Perhaps a simple meal together, conversation from the heart (talk about the above quote!), helping someone in need, doing something new and interesting, and maybe even… learning something new together!
Pleasures are wonderful and certainly not bad, and they can be enjoyed as a family. Maybe your family loves to get ice cream on Sundays, or watch movies together, or go shopping. But one difference between pleasure and joy is that pleasure alone doesn’t truly add to the quality of our lives, while joy goes deeper, changes us from the inside, builds stronger connections, and lasts longer. Let’s not substitute pleasure for joy!
Down Home wishes you joy in and with your loved ones this weekend – Happy Memorial Day!
