San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Friday Faces 2015: NOL, School Store, and More

{photo credit: Jessica Wilson, staff photos: Michelle Dorman}

Tonight we host our first meetings of the Parent Book Club – one in South County, and one in SLO, starting at 7 pm. Tomorrow evening the North County group will get together. We hope to see you at one of these gatherings to discuss Part 1 of Hannah Coulter! See the Events page of our website for locations.

There are several Team SLOCA members we want to introduce you to today, and we just couldn’t fit them all in the title (sorry…). These are all amazing and friendly people you will see around campus and will most likely interact with from time to time:

Melissa Carr (Ms. Mellie)

NOL – our “Nice Office Lady”

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A:  Since Monday Aug 17th!

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A:  The NOL position brought me here. I first heard about SLOCA from my dear friend and former neighbor, exercise pal and friend, Lisa Lewis.  Then more from Russ and Rea Berg when I worked for them at Beautiful Feet Books.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  When I was younger, I wanted to be a stewardess.  Yes, I did read a lot of Vicki Barr, flight stewardess books.  They were wonderful and I soooooooo wanted to do that.  Travel, meet new people, be a gracious hostess on a flight.  My father did not approve so I went to Cal Poly and became a graphic designer.  This was before computers!  Oh well.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A:  This includes, boots, flats, pumps, platforms, sandals, ski boots, clogs, hiking boots, water shoes, tennis shoes, fabulous fun heels, my red sparkly glitter flats, ok, like maybe 60 to 70?  Can't remember, most of my things are in storage in Idaho.  Love shoes, can you tell?  My favorite is a pair my grandmother had, black linen with floral embroidery, gold thread, fabulous pumps from the 30's and has a purse to match, so very fun!!!!

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A:  Love Pepperoni, black olive, pineapple pizza.  The spicy and the fruit.

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A:  Well, I read a few.  Half the Church – Carolyn James, The Sacred Romance – John Eldredge,  Twilight of Courage – Bodie Thoene, Deceit – Mark Levin.  Daily Bible readying.  I usually read a few books at the same time.

Emily Ferrarini

Librarian, School Store, and Friday Academy Class Book Club Leader

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A: Five years

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A: We were looking for small class sizes, caring teachers, and a more challenging and interesting learning environment. We'd have settled for 2 out of 3. We were blown away at our first parent meeting. I told my husband, “How can this even exist?” It felt like we had dreamed it up.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I wanted to be a spy.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: I probably have a lot of shoes. I don't think about my shoes very much.

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: Veggies.

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: I'm very slowly making my way through the Lord of the Rings trilogy with my boys. It is one of those things I know we'll always remember fondly, so I enjoy it, even when my throat hurts from long chapters and doing the voice of Gollum.

Brenda Tebbets

School Store Coordinator and Assistant to the Development Director

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A:  This will be our seventh year at SLOCA.

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A:  My youngest son has severe food allergies and I did not want him in a public school environment where I could not be an active parent involved from day to day.  I also did not feel that I was qualified to homeschool on my own.  I discovered the school from other parents talking about it on SLO County Mommies.  Once we came and did an observation and the campus tour, we were hooked.  My husband and I knew that we had found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  When I was really young, I wanted to be a famous singer.  As a teenager, I wanted to be a CPA.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A:  This is a trick question for me.  Personally, I think around 10.  I have my own business and sell toddler squeaky shoes, so technically, I own around 900 pairs.

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: I am actually burned out on pizza.  I will pretty much eat any kind, unless it has anchovies on it.

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: I have several books started and going at the same time.  Mindset, The Goldfinch, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Trouble, The Land of Spells, The Wishing Spell, and Grimm's Fairy Tales.

Tiffany Ratliff

Events and Volunteer Coordinator

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A: A little over 1 year!

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A: My delightful, wonderful, beautiful mother brought me to this school.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  I've wanted to be everything – A nun ( a girl can dream ), a world traveler, motivational speaker, hmmmm party planner.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: Around 20 or 25 pairs

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: Veggies, chicken, pesto, garlic and more garlic!

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: The Shack, for the 3rd time.

Erik Blaze

Athletic Director

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A: I coached the swim team last year and volunteered in other various ways, but this will be my first year on staff.

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A: David Hazlebeck, the former Athletic Director, recruited me to get involved with the school. After spending time with SLOCA students and volunteering in athletics, I fell in love with this place.

A: I wanted to be a doctor.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: 8

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: BBQ sauce and chicken

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
