There's an exciting new resource at the end of this blog post, in case you missed it in the last weekly update…
We will soon be wrapping up our time with Renaissance explorers, but here are a few more optional resources to enjoy as we continue our studies. This week it’s Magellan and Vespucci. As always, these videos and websites should be appropriate for all ages, but parents, please preview or watch along, to be sure they are suitable for your kids.
VIDEOS:
Renaissance Explorer Ferdinand Magellan – a nice 13-minute video for kids:
(If your kids enjoy this, check out his YouTube channel for videos on a few other explorers and a couple of Renaissance artists as well.)
Animaniacs – The Ballad of Magellan – silly, but educational:
Ferdinand Magellan Voyages of Discovery – Circumnavigation Part 1 of 4 – Each of the 4 parts of this BBC documentary is about 15 minutes long. All 4 parts can be found here.
Ferdinand Magellan Craft ideas:
Mini Bio: Amerigo Vespucci:
How America Got It’s Name – a short video from Drive Thru History:
WEBSITES:
Images and Maps for Magellan – from Encyclopedia Brittanica
Image of the Straight of Magellan:

Magellan Global Treasure Hunt pdf – From Enchanted Learning, this activity requires a globe or detailed world map (one showing country names, latitude and longitude).
Ferdinand Magellan Internet Treasure Hunt
Amerigo Vespucci Internet Treasure Hunt
Amerigo Vespucci Coloring Page
Account of Vespucci’s first voyage – Written by Vespucci himself, this is very long and probably more interesting to parents and older students.
One more thing to share: this week we celebrate Veteran's Day. If you missed it in the update, check out something new we are working on:
Throughout the year there are various holidays which, although they have great cultural and historical significance for us, we simply don't have the time to dedicate to them during the school day. We are building a packet of resources which will be available to you in the future, should you be looking for ways to celebrate and commemorate these holidays.
Our very first holiday resource is available to you now, just in time for the Veterans Day holiday coming up on November 11th! Click this link for our Veterans Day resources, where you're sure to find something for everyone in the family.
