Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

How about just a few more links for the Pilgrims, the first Thanksgiving, and Plymouth Colony?

VIDEOS:

Plimoth Plantation: Virtual Field Trip – This is a great 30-minute video from Scholastic, featuring Pilgrims and the Native American Wampanoag discussing their lives, their collaboration, and the first Thanksgiving. If you can’t get to Plimoth Plantation, this is the next best thing!

The Pilgrims – Life Before Thanksgiving – This short film recreates life at a Pilgrim plantation in colonial America in 1630:

Plymouth Colony Documentary – Here’s a 15 minute old-school educational film about the first year in the Plymouth Colony:

WEBSITES:

Thanksgiving Interactive: You are the Historian – This website was in last week’s Monday Mix-ins, but this specific link is a fun, award-winning activity from Plimoth Plantation. Take on the role of a “history detective” to investigate what really happened at the famous 1621 celebration.

The First Thanksgiving – We also featured this website from Scholastic last week, but check out the other links on daily life, the feast, historical letters, and even more videos.

Dyeing Wool the Colonial Way – This blog post recounts a fun, educational experience of wool dyeing in the fashion of 1760 (a little later than our timeline this week, but still enlightening!).

Make a Wigwam – Here’s an easy and cute craft idea!

Labeled Map of the 13 Colonies and Blank Map of the 13 British Colonies
