Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Free Friday and Art Exhibit Opportunity

Happy Friday, families! Gather your loved ones close this weekend, speak those positive words to your kids, set aside the technology for a bit, and make rest a priority. Here are a few things to put on your radar:

One of our SLOCA parents passed along this fantastic info – another E&E field trip idea!

  • Vatican Splendors Exhibit – Open now through August 28th at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley. Here’s an excerpt from the description on their website: “…visitors will encounter the art, history and culture of the Vatican with unprecedented access and insight. This special presentation of art and objects includes many never before on display in North America, and some not on view to the general public, even in Rome.” We understand that it contains works of art by Bernini, Guercino, Michelangelo, and others (probably not the Mona Lisa though…), as well as historical objects from the modern and ancient basilicas of Saint Peter’s in Rome. Sounds like it could be pretty amazing, considering all that we have studied in history this year!

And here are a few more local events happening this weekend:

  • Bees and Blossoms with the American Honey Queen – Saturday, April 30, from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the SLO Library Community Room. 2016 American Honey Queen Kim Kester of Wisconsin will teach attendees about the inner workings of the beehive, beekeeping in the United States, and how honeybees connect us from coast to coast. Suitable for all ages.
  • Allegria Winds –Saturday, April 30, from 3:15-4:00 PM at the Los Osos Library. The Allegria Winds is a quintet made up of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and french horn. They will perform light, fun music for all ages.
  • Save the Tree, Save the Bees Weekend – Arbor Day Concert April 30, 1-4pm at the Greenspace Creekside Reserve, Center Street, Cambria. And Bee Faire May 1, 1-4pm at the Cambria Historical Society, Center Street, Cambria. Click link above for more info.

Tomorrow is the last day to submit your photos for the Pet Photo Contest! $50 is waiting for the winner – get those photos snapped and sent in! Click here to enter.

We wish you a fun and restful weekend and happy adventuring if you set out on any!
