Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Free Friday and a SLOCA Student Youth Honoree

Happy Friday! Today we bring you news that truly belongs in the “Wednesday Wonder” category, but we wanted to share it with you sooner than that…

Arabella Roberts is an Intermediate 4 SLOCA student who has been chosen to be San Luis Obispo's Youth Honoree for the Walk to Cure Arthritis this year! The walk will take place this Saturday, May 21 (tomorrow!) at Cal Poly (Dexter Lawn), and Arabella will be giving her speech during the opening ceremony at 9am

What being the “Youth Honoree” means, is that she's been invited to make speeches at different events to raise awareness for this disease and how it affects many children. The first speaking engagement was held at Upper Crust for the Walk's “kick-off party.” She gave an amazing speech that she wrote herself… which SLOCA definitely prepared her for! She was confident, spoke clearly, and knew exactly when to pause at the right moments.

Here's a little more information about her that can be found on her team's website:

If you would like to come out to hear Arabella’s speech and join the Walk to Cure Arthritis tomorrow, you can register beforehand on the website – it’s no cost to join the team. Visit link above and click on the green “Join Team” button on the right. Or you can show up the morning of the race and sign up there to join Arabella’s team!

We are so proud of Arabella and are excited for her as she helps to raise awareness for this worthy cause!

Finally, here’s another family friendly event to put on your radar for this weekend, especially if you live in North County:

27th Annual Children’s Day in the Park – Saturday, May 21st, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at Atascadero Lake Park. Bounce houses, pinatas, Joe's Little Train, performances from local entertainers and more. Tons of fun for all ages! $5 Carnival Wristband – all proceeds benefit the 2016 Summer Aquatics Program.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend ahead!
