Monday Mix-Ins: Ocean Documentaries

Instead of the usual mix-ins for this holiday Monday, we compiled a list of ocean-themed documentaries you can stream that tie in with our science unit this trimester. Descriptions from the websites are listed as well. We thought this might be a fun way to get some E&E hours during your days off – enjoy learning all about this fascinating topic!

The following are currently available on Netflix:

The Blue Planet: A Natural History of the Ocean – David Attenborough narrates this definitive exploration of the marine world, from the familiar to the unknown, revealing the sea and its communities. This visually stunning series won two Emmys, including the award for Outstanding Non-Fiction Cinematography.

Moving Art: Oceans – Viewers will experience the power of ocean waves and the sea’s underwater splendor as filmmaker Louis Schwartzberg takes his camera in the deep.

Moving Art: Underwater – Filmmaker Howard Hall presents this remarkable collection of short films shot in the depths of the ocean, revealing a world of serene beauty.

Mission Blue – A Netflix Original. This documentary follows oceanographer Sylvia Earle’s campaign to save the world’s oceans from threats such as overfishing and toxic waste.

Planet Earth: The Complete Collection – Episode #11 of this series is titled “Ocean Deep:” Dive in to visit the animals that dwell on the ocean’s surface or within its deepest abyss, where finding food and conserving energy is paramount.

And here are a few options from Amazon Prime:

Wondrous Secrets of the Ocean Realm – There are 6 videos in this series.

The Living Sea – Music by Sting; narrated by Meryl Streep. In this Academy Award-nominated IMAX film, The Living Sea celebrates the “world ocean”–its beauty, diversity and importance to all life on earth. With spectacular underwater imagery, the film highlights some of the most extraordinary marine habitats in the world and explores our relationship with this complex and fragile environment.

IMAX Ocean Oasis Two Worlds-One Paradise – Ocean Oasis is a fascinating journey into the bountiful seas and pristine deserts of two remarkably different, but inextricably linked worlds – Mexico's Sea of Cortes and the Baja California desert.

Earth from Above – Seas and Oceans Part 1 – Seas and oceans cover 72% of the Earth's surface, but remarkably man has only discovered 15% of underwater life. Travel high above the blue planet and plunge deep under the ocean's depths to discover this mesmerizing world.

Voyage to the Edge of the World – Jacques Cousteau and his team aboard the Calypso sail to Antarctica, equipped with a submarine to explore the islands, icebergs, fossils, craters and, of course, the creatures of the ocean. He was one of the first to dive into the frigid waters of the South Pole.

Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin (series) – 3 of the 4 seasons of this series are free to stream on Amazon Prime. Season 1 is also available on Netflix. Based at the world's largest aquarium, The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Jeff takes viewers around the globe to explore Earth's least understood resource, our Oceans. Each week, Jeff is joined by experts to uncover the hidden secrets of the deep.

This one you have to rent, but it’s supposed to be pretty incredible:

Disneynature Oceans – Dive into OCEANS from Disneynature, the studio that brought you EARTH, for a spectacular story about remarkable creatures under the sea. Stunning images await as you journey into the depths of a wonderland filled with mystery, beauty and power.
