“Poetry is nearer to vital truth than history.”
~ Leonardo da Vinci
Memorization and Recitation are part of our core curriculum for all SLO Classical Academy students. To take it straight from one of our Field Guides:
“Recitation is a hallmark of Classical Education. All throughout history, the great leaders have had the habit of memorizing the great poetry of the time and the past. We believe that memorization and recitation of poetry is important, as it reinforces literary and reading concepts. In addition, it exercises children’s memory, stores beautiful language in their minds, and gives practice in speaking aloud in front of others.”
You may start to see poems assigned on your child’s grid soon! And if you have a Primary or Intermediate student, here’s a wonderful resource – cute printable posters for all the poems in Levels 1–4 of First Language Lessons, from Homeschool Creations:
First Language Lessons Poem Printables: Leves 1–4
These are perfect for our Grammar Stage kids! Print these to post in your home when your student is working on memorizing one of these poems, and keep a copy in the car, too – drive time is a great time to work on poetry memorization.
Enjoy!
