Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Friday Faces: Look and Find… Lead Team

Happy Friday, everyone! Would you like to meet SLOCA’s Lead Team? Well, with just a little work on your part, you can! Today we bring you our Lead Team members in this round of Friday Faces. Read the clues below and try to match them with the names provided. If you’re not sure, see the Our Staff page to read about each of these honored leaders (we challenge you to list your answers in the comments!):

Here are this week’s names to choose from:

Amy Calloway
Merideth Eades
Cozy Faber
Kateri Rein
Susie Theule
Ashley Walter

1. Raised in Washington state, this Lead Team member loved school as a child, lost that love in high school, and found it again in college. When she had her own children, she and her husband were inspired by the classical model of education and decided to homeschool, especially because she was excited about learning with her children. Her role at SLOCA has grown along with the school. This year, her goals are to read all the high school books, and to embrace cooking.

2. Before finding SLOCA, this Lead Team member worked for PG&E at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant for almost 20 years. She initially came to our school looking for part time work while homeschooling her son full time. Rather than finding herself a job, she ended up finding a school for her son! She then began volunteering on the playground and eventually worked her way into a job here. She has since had many roles at the school over the years. When not working hard at SLOCA, she enjoys spending time with her family.

3. This Lead Team member is a West Coast gal all the way. Although she has a special fondness for the Pacific Northwest, her love of sunshine ultimately convinced her to choose California as her home. Before moving to SLO, she and her husband traveled the world for 5 months! She looks forward to learning alongside her kids one day. When she’s not working hard at SLOCA, she enjoys fitness, cooking, home-improvement projects, the great outdoors, and naps.

4. Born in Chicago, this Lead Team member is a firm believer in the importance of studying the humanities, no matter the course a person’s career may take, because of its power to inspire a lifelong love of learning. While searching for an amazing education for her own children, she became “smitten” by Classical Education and her life took an unexpected turn. In the rare moments when she’s not working on all things SLOCA, her activities revolve around her family, such as out-cheering anyone in the crowd at her kids’ sporting events. She’s also an expert camper and loves cultivating her family’s home.

5. Calling the Central Coast home for the past 30 years, this Lead Team member’s love of learning was encouraged in the loving hands of her mother, an educator who never stopped learning herself. She followed in her mother’s footsteps as a teacher with an excitement about education. She found SLOCA when she decided to homeschool her oldest child, and has since taken on a lead role at the school. When not working, she enjoys yoga, hiking, reading, camping and spending time with friends. This year she hopes to learn to play the ukulele, and to memorize more poetry.

6. Growing up in Illinois, this Lead Team member spent hours reading the dictionary as a child. After living and working in the Silicon Valley for awhile, she moved to SLO with her husband and kids. When it was time for their children to start Kindergarten, they discovered SLOCA and knew it was the best place for them. Early on she jumped in and helped where help was needed, eventually ending up in her current role. With a true “growth mindset,” she is currently learning to play a Chopin Nocturne on the piano.
