“Character is the result of two things: Mental attitude and the way we spend our time.”
~Elbert Green Hubbard
January’s character trait is Diligence:
Committing to doing tasks with excellence and persevering with determination and patience to complete tasks in spite of difficulties and discouragement.
Catch phrase: Do your best; don't give up!
Often January is the time of the school year where we need to dig down deep and pursue diligence to shift back into work mode or push through some mid-year blues. After all, we’ve just returned from a glorious 3-week break and sometimes we aren’t quite ready to get back to a normal school schedule.
We can help our kids develop diligence by modeling it in our own attitude about work and learning, and demonstrating patience as we all adjust back to school routines. Whether it’s sticking to math fact practice, working on IEW assignments, completing our Invention Convention projects, reinstating technology-free family time, or any other step-by-step learning process that may involve a little difficulty or discouragement, let’s commit to completing tasks with excellence and encouraging our students (and ourselves) to persevere!
Here is this month’s mini-poster you can print and display as a reminder to focus on Diligence this month (click for full size pdf):
