If you have kids at SLOCA, you’ve probably already heard all about the esteemed visitor we had at the beginning of the month… but today we want to pass along a few photos and tell you a little about the time we spent with Ben Franklin!
Eryka Santoyo, who attended the event on both tracks and wrote up the following to share with our readers, is our Development officer here at SLOCA. She works alongside Cozy Faber on all of our fundraising activities and efforts. This year she will be running the Revolutionary Cannonbowl (our kid-driven fundraiser) so you can all expect to be hearing from her as the event grows closer!
Dr. Benjamin Franklin, who among other titles has been dubbed as the First American, travelled through time and space to visit all of us here at SLO Classical Academy a couple of weeks ago! Dr. Franklin is a man of wisdom, humor, and intellectual insight – none of which was lacking during his visit with our SLOCA community. Dr. Franklin spent in-depth time with our primary through high school students, giving them a literal front-row seat to his life of accomplishments and personal virtue.
After giving each group of students a brief overview of his life, Dr. Franklin opened the floor for questions, and boy did our SLOCA students come prepared! Students inquired about everything from Dr. Franklin’s favorite food to what he thought about today’s America. It was said multiple times how impressed Dr. Franklin was with the students’ intellect and he continuously bestowed high praise on our teachers for gracefully shaping their minds in such a thoughtful manner. Dr. Franklin’s interaction with each group of students differed depending on the questions that were asked- some of his responses being very serious and some ironic and humorous.
However, one thing remained the same throughout; Dr. Franklin left each of our students with the same nugget of wisdom: “No matter whether your ancestors were on the Mayflower, were Native Americans, came over on the slave ships, or as immigrants seeking a better life… the constitution and the right to vote – they are yours. Use them well!” Thank you, Dr. Franklin for ever reminding us that we are all equal citizens under the constitution and united we shall stand.
Thank you, Eryka! And many thanks to Dr. Benjamin Franklin (aka Christopher Lowell), for returning to SLOCA and interacting with our history-loving students in such an engaging presentation.
