“One of the signs of passing youth is the birth of a sense of fellowship with other human beings as we take our place among them.”
~ Virginia Woolf
It’s Friday already?! (And September already?!) Week 1 is done – Congratulations! Maybe it was all a whirlwind, but you’ll find your stride and settle in.
Here on the blog on Fridays, we have an assortment of items we will be posting, but one thing they all have in common is the theme of Life Together – or the community aspect of both SLOCA life and Family life. We want to foster that “sense of fellowship with other human beings as we take our place among them.” So here you’ll find real life ideas and encouragement to help you feel more connected to your own family and to our SLOCA family.
• Some Fridays you’ll see community events or family-friendly suggestions to help foster connection with those you love and care about.
• Soon on Fridays we will start introducing everyone on staff here at SLOCA in a fun new way, so you can get to know our Team SLOCA community a bit better. Look for that in a couple of weeks!
• We also want to introduce a new series this year entitled Friday Flops, in which we’ll take a look at the importance of failure – how to embrace it, rise from it, build on it, and be vulnerable about it. As you've probably heard by now, our school theme this year is “Dare Greatly.” So we will be daring greatly as we share some of our own failures (or flops) and we invite others to do so as well! Think of it as a counterpart to Wednesday Wonders, because doing Life Together at SLOCA means we will all experience defeat as well as victory, and sharing both draws us closer together, helps us relate to each other, and allows us learn from one another.
• One last Friday item: we plan to continue posting information about upcoming student performances or events that our SLOCA kids are involved in. We can support our school community by seeing what students are doing outside of SLOCA, showing up, and cheering them on. (Or encouraging them in their pursuits when we see them on campus.) And if you’re looking for family-friendly events anyway, why not choose something that a friend or classmate is involved in? So if your SLOCA student has an upcoming performance/show/exhibit, etc., please let us know and we can get it on the blog on Fridays.
Here's an upcoming opportunity for middle schoolers:
Cal Poly's Society of Women Engineers will be hosting its bi-annual Building an Engineer Day (BAE Day) on October 21st from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. BAE Day is an event that allows middle school students to participate in a series of engineering activities and labs from the various engineering clubs on campus. If you are interested in participating in this event please fill out the interest list using the following link:

Feel free to share the link with anyone who is interested.
And one more last-minute item to note:
Meathead Movers in SLO is collecting donations for victims of Tropical Storm Harvey in Southeast Texas, from now until this Sunday, September 3rd. If you'd like to contribute, here's the Tribune article with the details.
Enjoy the long weekend – remember there are no classes on campus Monday or Tuesday, September 4th and 5th, because of Labor Day. Spend some quality time together with the special people in your life!
