Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Want to enrich your home learning environment, and inspire your kids to go deeper as we study Ancient Egypt – without feeling like you’re adding more school work?

Invest in a few games, puzzles, special books, and other fun activities that relate to this time period, and encourage your kids to explore and play! If you follow our Facebook page, you’ll see that we post suggestions like this from time to time. Today, we’ve gathered a list of possibilities to share. Scatter these treats around the house to entice your kids, fill a basket with special items to play with, and feed their love of learning!

First, we want to mention that we carry the following excellent supplemental items in our school store, for kids and adults – you can’t go wrong with these:

General reference books:

  • The Usborne Encyclopedia of the Ancient World
  • The History of the Ancient World, by Susan Wise Bauer

For adults:

  • Nefertiti by Michelle Moran – historical fiction
  • Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt, by Barbara Mertz – a narrative history by a great author known for her Amelia Peabody mysteries

For kids:

  • Mummy Math: An Adventure in Geometry by Cindy Neuschwander – a math/history combo by a SLOCA grandma!
  • Ancient Egypt: Tales of Gods and Pharaohs by Marcia Williams – in a comic format; lots of fun
  • Tutankhamun, by Demi – a beautiful picture book bio by one of our favorite author/illustrators
  • The 5,000 Year Old Puzzle: Solving a Mystery of Ancient Egpyt – a picture book

And here are more fun items to consider:
