Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Thursday Thoughts

Blog posts on Thursdays will generally focus on a few different things. We will touch on classical education, character, campus life, student work, book reviews, and anything related to our school/parent community.

For our first Thursday Thoughts post, we thought it would be fun to share this short video we found on classical education:

The video summarized only part of the educational model you signed up for, because at SLOCA, it is not just classical education, it is classical education with a twist. This “twist” topic was one of our discussions during our big team training last week. SLOCA staff and teachers examined what this word truly means. Not just in the context of the classroom but in daily life also. In conclusion, we found that the “twist” at SLOCA is a myriad list, complex and not just one thing.

Lisa Ann Dillon, our Intermediate Lead Teacher, gave a presentation to our staff last year about this very subject and we shared about it on one of our posts. Lisa Ann beautifully exposes why certain principles are incorporated into our program. It is informative, enlightening and we highly encourage you to read it.

What are your thoughts? For our returning families, what do you love most about SLOCA? And for our new families, what drew you in to our school? Please comment below…we would love to hear from you!
