We love hearing about your wondering stories from home! Today, we’re excited to share a thoughtful story from one of our SLOCA moms, Nancy Anastasia. Nancy and her husband, David, are entering their third year at SLOCA. They have two children, Adrian (5th) and Alexia (3rd), currently enrolled in our program.
To demonstrate in detail how this family found a creative way and continues to foster wonder during their homeschooling days, read on below. Enjoy!
The “I Wonder” Jar
During our table discussion at our SLOCA 2018-19 parent meeting, I remembered our family’s I wonder jar and how it came to be…
At first, this was my simple solution to keeping our homeschool days from veering way off track. Attempting to balance my “so many things, so little time” mindset, my desire to be intentional, my guilt of not making time to cultivate my kiddos endless inquisitiveness “why & how…?” “what if….?”
Notably, one of the beautiful elements of homeschooling is the ability to slow down, experience with the senses, twirl the globe or pull up an old map, yet some of these fascinating findings would take us off course, beyond the classical connection…. because, with these kiddos, the questions and wonderings never cease!
My husband and kiddos are textbook natural wonderers. They ponder and question. It is fun and beautiful yet exhausting. Because how do you sit and wonder? It feels unproductive. I wanna make, create and experience.
So once a week we reach into the jar, the kiddos know whose turn it is to read the question and then we wonder aloud. Together. We research, discuss and Google.
And the more I leaned into this idea of wonder, I found that I, indeed possess this. It just doesn’t look like theirs. Imagine that?!
This is such a great idea, Nancy! Thank you for reminding us that making space to wonder doesn’t have to complicated. All it takes is just a minute or two (or a simple jar) coupled with some intentionality and out comes this marveling experience. Thank you so much for sharing!
With this in mind, if YOU, our readers, have your own wondering stories from home, please email us and let us know! This has been a great platform to encourage and connect our families and we invite you to join in! We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
