Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Engaging Conversations

engaging conversations

A couple of weeks ago, we delved into the reasoning behind why we read books. For today’s tell-all, we’re going to hear from Adam Andrews again of Center for Lit on How to Talk to Your Kids About Books. With the upcoming holiday break presenting us with extra opportunities to slow down, maybe read loud more books together or for some of us, finally getting to read, we thought this podcast would be helpful in helping you and your kids engage in deeper conversation about the books you read together.

Let’s listen in on Adam Andrews along with Sarah Mackenzie, founder of the Read-Aloud Revival, discuss the following:

  • approaching literature from a Socratic perspective
  • how to ask the right questions when reading
  • Adam’s proven method for discovering an author’s intent and widening our understanding of books

We hope Adam inspired you to continue asking the right questions as you discuss literature with your loved ones. If you’re new to SLOCA or if you’re new to literary analysis and unsure of which literature to pick-up, start with a picture book! As suggested, grab A Bargain for Frances and see how it goes. You can always visit Adam’s site for other title ideas as well.
